Event Coverage: Drift Mania Canadian Championship Round #3 @Mosport DDT (Part 2 - Drivers & Finals)

To close off our edition of Drift Mania's event coverage, we plan to highlight the drivers and some tandem competition action. In this competition drivers were paired up and had two runs that were judged to see who moved on. Each driver would take a turn in the lead position. The goal of the driver was to set a line and pace that the other driver would have a hard time keeping up while clipping each clipping point and holding the drift. The second car got points for following as close to the lead car as possible, bonus points for love taps, while following the leaders line and holding the drift.

First lets start out with a few driver intros...

Drivers make their way to the front spectator area...
You can always count on a little show boating any time a drifter has your attention
Finally all lined up...
Unfortunately I didn't get the memo that media pass holders needed to wear long pants to go onto the track, I decided to wear shorts not thinking about it because of the scorching heat that was expected, so I was stuck on the sidelines taking most of my shots. That meant I only got decent shots of some of the drivers, these are the Driver Intro's I did manage to snap.

#12 - Bradley Carlton

#08 - Peter Chrisikopoulos

#84 - Joe Thiffault

#70 - Alexandre Michaud

#43 - Francis Tasse - aka 'Mr. Hollywood' I heard the announcers referring to him as...

#86 - Pat Cyr beside his F20 Turbo powered AE86

#11 - Marc Landreville

Let's start things off with the Top 16's battles, first up we have the #1 place qualifier Marc Landreville in the red, white, black Lacroix Tuning RHD Silva and 16th place Simon Schaffner in his teal colored 240sx

Both drivers looking good out of 1

Simon carries too much speed and goes super wide into 2

and off onto the grass...

The win goes to Landreville after a second pass

#12 Bradley Carlton in the blue 240sx followed by TomTom (#64 - Tomy Boivert Bellemare) in his black and yellow Nissan

TomTom trying to close the gap...

2nd pass, Brad following into turn 2

Tucks in nicely before the end of the turn...

Sideways action continues as they pass the spectators...

This round goes to Brad!
Next up we have #70 - Alexandre Michaud in the hard to miss neon yellow 'Hype' car, and car #22 Claude Poirier in the G-Max 350z drop-top.

IIRC the 350z didn't hold much of a drift thru 1 and even though close here, didn't have much angle thru 2.

Alex on the other hand, follows Claude's line to a Tee...

and he holds it there all the way around the course....

All the way until Claude puts two wheels off on the last turn, WIN goes to Michaud!
V8 swaps are all the craze in the drift world these days, #62 Bob Patinka of Patinka Motorsports puts his LS powered 240sx to good use against #80 Alex Gosselin
Patinka pulling a bit of a gap by the second clipping point...
Alex trying to keep pace...
Swapping places, Patinka doing the following...
Patinka turning up the pressure...
Closer look at Patinka's open fender and front end...
Patinka moves on to the next round

#86 Pat Cyr in his Turbo F20 powered AE86 goes up against. This was probably the most one sided battle of the day, almost to the point where I kept wondering if Brad Paauw in his #11 bright yellow on green S14 was having mechanical troubles...

Pat pulling a huge gap after turn 1
Turn 2, Paauw no where to be seen...

Looks like Paauw gives up and doesn't give attempt a drift through 2....
One of many great panning shots of Pat as he passes by...

Switching places, Paauw gives it another try, this time in the lead position...

Not sure what happened here, but it looks like Paauw choked or is having issues with his car, good thing Pat was skillful enough to escape with only a light tap...

Pat doesn't even finish the round, just stays up front to claim his uncontested win

This brings us to the most exciting duo of the day, the #08 Peter Chrisikopoulos and #24 David Briggs battle. These two drivers definitely put on a show for their hometown fans.

Briggs doing a great job following Peter's line...
Peter using the whole track and laying down a bit of smoke...
If there was an award for the best smoke show, I'm pretty sure Peter would get it...
Briggs was criticized the whole day for his slower entry times, making it hard for the follower...
Their first go resulted in a OMT (One More Time!), Briggs would have nailed it if it wasn't for his slower entry...
Almost a repeat, too close to call...
Love the smoke!
They battle it out all the way around the back section of the course...
and again it was too close to call, so they get another OMT, but needed a tire change before doing another round. While they do that, #43 Francis Tasse and #31 Eric Paradis are up next. I must say Eric's white 240sx droptop gets my award for best looking car of the day...

Hollywood in front putting on a show...
Eric not going down without a fight...
Francis 'Hollywood' Tasse ends up taking the win and moving on to the next round. JoDrift's #84 Joe Thiffault and #76 Dany Bernier in his G35 coupe is up next.

I can't recall what happened, but here is a shot of Thiffault  running away with the lead...
This round goes to Thiffault in his AE86
Briggs and Chrisikopoulos giving it another go...

Looks like there might have been some contact...
Briggs has some mechanical trouble after losing his front end and needed to make a visit to the pits...

Next up Brad Carlton vs. Marc Landreville. I didn't get too many shots of this battle, Mr. Carlton took this round...

Brad does a great job here against 1st place qualifier Landreville

and sealed the victory during his leading round...

Hype car Alexandre Michaud meets Bob Patinka in his top 8 match-up, let's see how they get on...

Michaud carries alot of speed into clipping point 2, a little too much as he goes way too wide...

This allows Patinka to sneak in and grab the lead

Alex doesn't give up, and continues the chase...

He ends up, completely taking out the cone on the 3rd clipping point

Patinka spinning on his lead round...

Both drivers making mistakes, judges decide to give them a OMT! (One More Time!)

While Alexandre Michaud and Bob Patinka get ready for a OMT, Francis Tasse is up against Joe Thiffault in their top 8 battle.
Tasse taking the first round of this battle...

My camera liking some more AE86 action...

This round goes to Francis Tasse

Thiffault needing to let off some steam before ending his day...
Michaud and Patinka on their OMT runs...

No issues this time, both looking strong...

They hold it like this all the way around the back part of the track, close call...

This round goes to Patinka, love the open front end...

That brings us to back to Peter Chrisikopoulos and David Briggs still in their top 16 battle after a small collision on their 3rd OMT.

Briggs wearing a modified front end...

Still looking clean, for a drift car...

Finally we have a decision, Briggs takes this round and moves on...
After a tiring battle Briggs is matched up against Pat Cyr

Looks like Briggs running out of steam...

AE86 posing for the camera...

Briggs giving it all he has left trying to shake Cyr...

Pat being on his game, takes this round and move onto the Top 4!

Now for some top 4 action between Landreville and Patinka
Landrebille clips the outside...

Then goes off, ending his day with some damage

Patinka advances to the Finals!
Pat Cyr and Francis Tasse fight for a place in the finals...

Both drivers looking good....

Very close rounds...
A slight edge going to Cyr as he puts pressure on Tasse all the way to the back of the course, so close I'm pretty sure they touched!

Cyr headed to the Finals!
Final battle, Cyr vs. Patinka

Both coming out strong...

Cyr slightly ahead...

Really close...

.....and the win goes to

Pat Cyr!

Patinka finishes in 2nd, Tasse 3rd!

The taste of victory!
